“ON TEACHING: My passion is helping students find the most powerful tool at their disposal; their voice. This daunting journey has many peaks and valleys. As an educator I hope to walk with students on their journeys rather than just giving them directions and hoping for the best.”
I’ve wanted to be an educator all my life. I’ve always felt a deep connection to my own teachers and was always sympathetic to what I saw the challenges of teaching as. For whatever reason I wanted to have on others, the tremendous impact my teachers had on me.
Understanding the great impact teachers have on students, from the other side, I am even more committed to seeing diversity and compassion, especially in our most challenging schools. If we can get our schools to reflect the positivity and love of our communities, our students will buy into education again.
History Teacher
My approach to history is inspired by historians like James Loewen, Howard Zinn & Bruce Lesh. As a result, my history classes and workshops emphasize skill acquisition over fact consumption.
As a history teacher I strive to teach a true, honest, reflective history outside of the confines of the standard textbook. Students should learn not only what really happened in history but also how perspectives, not facts, shape history.
As a teaching artist I offer workshops & residencies centered around acting and creative writing. Through active engagement of the Mind, Body, Voice and Soul actors of all ages can explore different characters and activate engaging performances.
My writing workshops are usually focused on identity. How does one identify themselves and what identities are 'assigned' to them? How can understanding ourselves help ease these tensions.
